Professional Development

The following CPD opportunities are available to REME Officers and Soldiers and in some cases also Reservists, and in the experience of RAJA these opportunities are not widely known.

Army Skills Offer

What is it?

The Army Skills Offer is an initiative that will pay, in full, for selected qualifications for courses you have already completed. However, you will then need to choose which qualification you wish to proceed with, as the scheme will normally only pay for one qualification per eligible military course, per rank.

If you wish to pay for any additional qualifications then you will have to contact the relevant awarding body direct.

Qualifying courses for Soldiers include:

Phase 1 Training, Phase 2 Training, PNCO CLM, JNCO CLM, SNCO CLM, WO CLM, Range Management

Qualifying courses for Officers include:

RMAS, PQO CC, JOLP+JOTAC, CWC, ICSC(L)

Qualifying courses for Reserve Officers and Soldiers

JNCO CLM, SNCO CLM, WO CLM, RMAS TACC, Reserve LEOC, ROSC(L)

What do I need to do?

It is often found that individuals missed the opportunity to register for qualifications immediately after completing an Army course. You can apply retrospectively, and in some cases, even post-discharge from service subject to a time limitation. Additionally, the offer improves all the time and so eligibility depends heavily on when you completed qualifying courses. The most effective first step is to use the Army Skills Offer eligibility checker which will provide you with a list of all the available qualifications depending on the course and date you attended. The eligibility checker is hosted on the civilian internet at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PJ5NP32 or alternatively use a search engine and search for Army Skills Offer which will take you right to the relevant site. Also on the Army Skills Offer site is detail on how to apply for each qualification.

City and Guilds Professional Recognition Awards

What is it?

Professional Recognition Awards are qualifications designed for those who wish to gain recognition for the practical application of professional skills, knowledge and understanding in employment, offering an employment-based route to higher level qualifications. Professional recognition awards are available under two disciplines; firstly The Army Skills Offer has a route to qualifications in Leadership and Management with a simplified application process that expires two years post discharge.

Four Levels available:

L4 – Licentiateship (LCGI) – JNCO CLM Pt 3

L5 – Affiliateship (AfCGI) – SNCO CLM Pt 3

L6 – Graduateship (GCGI) – WO CLM Pt 3

L7 – Membership (MCGI) – ICSC(L) (Maj)

The second qualification available is in Engineering. The REME Arms School is able to offer both the Level 5 Affiliateship (AfCGI) and Level 6 Graduateship (GCGI) awards in Engineering to personnel who meet the criteria set out below.

REME personnel who have attained two years’ substantive Sgt and who have completed all three phases of the SNCO CLM training are eligible for the Level 5 Affiliateship (AfCGI) award in Engineering.

REME personnel who have attained two years’ substantive WO2 and who have completed all three phases of the WO CLM training are eligible for the Level 6 Graduateship (GCGI) award in Engineering.

You must be either currently serving in the Army or have left within the last two years to qualify for this award. These qualifications are available for all REME trade groups.

What do I need to do?

For qualifications in Leadership and Management see the Army Skills Offer website described previously for the latest process and fees. For qualifications in Engineering the POC in the first instance is Mrs Lisa Lewkowicz at the REME Arms School on lisa.lewkowicz100@mod.gov.uk or Mil:95481 4386 Civ: 01249 894386. You will be required to complete an application form and pay a fee of £95 for AfCGI or £110 for CGCI.

Chartered Manager

What is it?

Chartered Manager is the highest status that can be achieved in the management profession.

There are three routes to becoming a Chartered Manager, the most simple and cost-effective route is by ‘Exemption’ and is available to those with a CMI Level 5 Diploma (or higher) and three years management experience. This means that on completion of the WOCLM Pt 3 you are eligible to apply via the exemption route.

What do I need to do?

A short written reflective assessment plus a one off assessment fee of *£115 (+ VAT) and the cost of membership is required. Please see https://www.managers.org.uk/individuals/become-a-member/get-chartered/exemption-route and fill out the online form to register you interest and for more information.
